ISSUE 3: AUGUST 1999

CAPTAINS LOG

Another mission sucessfully completed. Not many attended but there was the mix up with the dates. It is always the third Sunday of the month (Please note dates for 1999 in another part of this newsletter). I had intended to contact eeryone about the mix up but unfortunately my husband had a heart attack, which Mark interrupted with a phone call, so I was somewhat distracted.

Membership stands at 40 (paid up members) now. This is very good for only three meetings. I really feel we are coming together, not only as a club, but as friends. I cannot believe it is only 8 weeks since I met some of you for the first time! We have to build on this and make Starbase 410 the best club in the UK, if not Europe! We have to make it so that people want to come. That means we want ideas from you (the members). Also if you see anyone new, speak to them. It may make the difference between them joining or not.

Enclosed with this issue is your Invitation to the "Wedding of the Year". The Rustai or bonding ceremony between B'lus'be and K'SQ'qwa (pronounced Kass kwar) (Wendy & Bob Hedley).

Do not forget the Manor House Museum. We need ideas & volunteers. We also want to build a Borg Regeneration Unit. All "Blue Peter" Fans let us know. We also want to exhibit the results of the clubs own "Blue Peter" Competition. There will be a prize for the best one, plus everyone who enters will get 5 points while the Winner will get 10 points and the prize. This points system applies to all competitions at the Starbase.

As I write this... Clacton has been and gone. What a fantastic day we had..... 24 members went and 16 of them were in uniform or costume!

The Captain and First Officer were on Special Ops again, so in their places were K'iHQas the Klingon and Zuveda the Andorian. The General came along with his bond mate K'bang. I was so proud of everyone. You looked smart and took part in the spirit of which it was intended. We wanted to kidnap one of the Star Wars actors but they weren't having any of it, so we kidnapped Kev (one of the organisers) instead. We then sent the younger members round with buckets to wheel in ransom money for his release. We collected £39.55 for the Sea Cadets. Kev said he didn't think he was worth that much.... until I pointed out that most of it was for us to keep him!

We made quite a stir in Clacton as we walked through the town in Costume. I think that an Andorian, 3 Klingons and a Cadet is not something they see everyday. Another group caused quite a stir in McDonalds. Ask the two Lauras' where they keep their money, when there are no pockets on Starfleet Uniforms!!! Then you will know what Mark, Ke'reth and the others were laughing about.

The Council were very impressed because we cleared up after ourselves. I cant claim credit for this because I was with the General who was having a Klingon Trefoil tatooed on his bum. There's dedication to the Empire for you! The day ended on a high note when the coach suffered a hull breach (a back window fell out!) on the journey home. I have since heard that the window is still there, completely in one piece, where it landed on a hedge on the side of the road!

Until we meet again, good health and best wishes.

Captain Anarita Jat

EDITORS CORNER

I must firstly apologise for the last issue which was a bit of a mess, not to mention some of the mistakes and its lateness. The excuse was that Ann had a disaster on her hands and I went on holiday. On a lighter note, I must say thanks to Ke'reth (the workhorse of the club) for an emergency re-type.

I'd like to mention that I and some of the members went to the Clacton Sci Fi Convention and we had a wonderful time except when the price suddenly went up because of certain people! However, this did not spoil the day too much. And now it's to the nest meeting which I hope will be a great success!

This news letter is improving all the time. This time the plan is to get it out on time. We have not yet managed this in the past, but as going to press, my thumbs are up and there is little panic compared to the tonnes of it I experienced last time. The great thing is the fact that there are lots of great new ideas in the pipeline.... both mine and Leigh Browns', who is the first of, I hope, many full members of my department.

THIS MONTHS PROFILE

NAME: Captain Anarita Jat

POSITION: Commanding Officer of Starbase 410

BRANCH: Starfleet Intelligence

Place of Birth: Trill

Year of Birth: 2346

Parents: Wilsem and Margita Tehamus.

Parents Occupations:
Mother: Schoolteacher
Father: Ambassador to Kronos - died at Khitomer 2351

Anarita joined Starfleet at the age of 18 in 2364 and graduated with degrees in Xenobiology, Stella Cartography and Navigation.

>While she was at the Academy her name was changed from Anarita Tehamus to Ann Thomas for ease of pronounciation and spelling. Anarita left the Academy with the rank of Lieutenant and was recruited by Starfleet Intelligence. She went many secret missions which are still classified.

In 2372 she joined the Trill joining programme. It took four years of training and evaluation, including rigorous trial by Curzon Dax. It was Curzon who recommended that she should be the new host for his friend Anturun Jat, who had died after a serious fall down some stairs.

Ann changed her name back to Anarita and assumed the second name, by Trill custom, to Jat. After 'Joining' she returned to Starfleet Intelligence to resume her career.

With the commissioning of a New Starbase in close proximity to the Klingon Empire and the war with the Dominion. Starfleet felt it was necessary to appoint a Commanding Officer with unusual skills. Anarita was promoted to Captain and duly appointed Commanding Officer of the newest and most technologically advanced Starbase ever to be commissioned in the Federation.

Because Anarita needed a team she could rely on, she was able to pick her own Command Team to some degree. This meant that the Starbase would still function efficiently even when she got called away on the occasional Secret Mission. She chose the Vulcan T'Pina as her First Officer, who despite being disabled at Wolf 359 also had unusual but valuable skills that would be needed. Through her symbionts association with Dax, Anarita had got to know several Klingons and a word in Gowrons ear got her Ke'reth Zantai Makura. Through her other contacts in Starfleet Command she was able to secure Mark Swan, a hot shot lieutenant with good ideas, a sense of humour and boundless enthusiasm from USS Alexandria. To fill the void in Starbase security, Lieutenant Commander K'SQ'qwa' SuDs' qan'ya', a highly recommended and experienced Starfleet Klingon Security Officer from Starbase 401, was appointed Chief of Security. Finally, she requested the Starfleet Intelligence Ship USS Rage to be placed on attachment commanded by a young Captain Leigh Brown.

Thus, her team assembled, she was ready to take command.

Previous Host:

Anturun Jat - a male and also a Peace & Hostage negotiator. Close friend and collegue of Curzon Dax. Awarded order of the Bat'leth. Died aged 62.

DEAR DOCTOR

This spot is to allow you to have any questions of a medical nature answered. It also acts as an "agony uncle" slot. If you wish to send anything in, please send it to the Doctor :- Doctor K'batlh

Q. Dear Doctor

I have an issue which I feel may harm my future in Starfleet. I am a Federation Cadet at Starfleet Academy. I work hard but the problem is that I bear an incredible likeness to Wesley Crusher. It is becoming unbearable! I even found myself thinking about how I might accidentally fall into the warp core in the engineering department. I'm at my wits end! I even sound like him. It wouldn't be so bad if I was Human, but I'm Cardassian! Please Help.

Yours helplessly,

Cardeegan

A. Dear Cardeegan,

You do have a serious problem. However although you are the first Cardassian to suffer from this desperate condition - known as 'smartass syndrome', luckily it is curable. The treatment is three years of intensive analytical psychotherapy and five major facial surgical procedures. Otherwise, if this fails, you will be forced to spend the rest of your days as Wesley Crusher!

Good Luck

Dr. K'batlh

FROM THE DESK OF THE KLINGON AMBASSADOR

nuqneH (Greetings), from the Empire.

Once again I find myself writing this page. "My desk is stacked with Padds. My disruptor sits in its holster and my blade rests within its scabbard but I am still a warrior." I wish I'd been the first to say these words but these are the words of General Martok, or should that be Chancellor Martok. A man - who like myself - has gone from Warrior to Politician. Like Martok, I now fight on a different battlefield. I think I finally understand what Shakespeare meant when he said that "the pen is mightier than the sword". I can now (if I choose) kill with the stroke of a pen, or set a fleet of starships upon my enemies; power indeed. And, as always, with great power comes great responsibility.

Terrans have a word 'Paperwork' . Even though they've long since stopped using paper, the word still holds. On my desk I have Padds, written in Terran, Klingon, Vulcan and Romulan. My skills with languages are a great asset . Over the years, I have learned to speak five languages fluently, some even with a regional accent. These are Terran, Vulcan, Cardassian, Romulan and two dialects of my own native Klingon. These help me greatly when it comes to Ambassadorial Meetings and Business Conferences. I'm currently hosting a series of Aid negotiations with the Cardassians. Beacuse, without the support of the Dominion, the Cardassian Union disintegrated. Call it irony, if you like, but the person put forward by the Federation to oversee their side of the relief effort, is from a race that the Cardassians did their best to enslave. Her name is Colonel Kira Nerys (she's ex-bajoran militia) and she is due to arrive here in three days time (as I write this). When it comes to paperwork, only one thing consoles me, and that is, that I'm sure the Captain has even more 'paperwork' on her desk than I.

To finish off, I think I will write about the 'Makura Clan', my people....

The Makuras dwell within a number of fortified mountain settlements, known by the name of Khemnis. The older parts of this settlement have stood for mor than sixteen hundred years and have been carved from the very heart of the mountains. Khemnis is located within the same mountain range as the Kri'stak volcano (the very volcano where Kahless forged the first Bat'leth) but this is not a geography lesson. This is about the people who live in the forests of the lower slopes all the way up to the mountains' snowy peaks.

The Makura Clan are known as the wolf people. This is because of the Clans founder, Makura the Mighty. History books tell us that he was one of Kahless' Generals. He was also a giant of a man, known to stand at least seven feet six inches tall and the symbol he bore on his shield was the Melk'tag or fanged white wolf. The Makuras have used this symbol ever since. It is for this reason that many Klingons still fear and respect 'The people of the Wolf' and many sayings have been written about them, such as:-

A wolf cub today, will be the hunter of tomorrow : This refers to the fact that the Makuras seem to mature faster than members of many lowland clans. This is probably due to the harsh mountain conditions.

An old wolf can still have sharp teeth : This saying refers to K'Zorn, the Clans Epetai or chieftain. He is still fighting in battles well into his nineties. He even managed to dispatch three blade wielding assassins with only the use of his walking cane.

Kahless help the guilty man when the wolf is judge : This refers to a judge by the name of Krenn, the son of Lokeb. He was renowned for giving out on the spot death sentences after challenging the accused to prove himself innocent.

On a mild day you can hear the wolves sing : This a common saying. It refers to the fact that the wolves take shelter in caves during severe weather and then emerge to hunt when the blizzards have subsided. It is then you can hear them sing.

The young cub takes note when the old wolf howls : Listen to your elders and you will learn from them.

Don't mock the wolf unless you're sure that you're free from the mountains : The Makuras have many friends in many part of the Empire. This saying warns about speaking out against them.
