CAPTAINS LOG
Mission 2 completed. Once
again I hope, to the satisfaction of all who took part. My thanks to all
who helped in any way. Putting barbecues together, setting up food,
manning the 'Ops' table etc. I shan't name individuals incase I miss
someone out, you know what you did and accept my thanks.
I enjoyed
the meeting and feel that the club is really starting to come together.
Friendships are being made and ideas are coming forward. If you have an
idea let us have it, even if you feel it is bizarre. We need different,
funny crazy ideas to keep the meetings interesting. My aim and that of the
members is to make this one of the biggest and best clubs in the country.
When people hear of Starbase 410 they will associate it with friendly,
interesting fun meetings. Two meetings down and we already have a
membership of 35 plus, with more in the pipeline. Where we will we be in a
years time?
Away Team Missions
As I mentioned last time, we have been out and about
making appearances at charity functions and schools. T'Pina, Tom Carr,
Ambassador Ke'reth, General K'batlh, Mark Swan and myself went to Hardwick
Middle School Summer Fete the day before the first meeting. The Klingons
and the Borg are very popular at these sort of functions. The General went
back to Bradford after the first meeting but was back again two weeks
later, to stay with me for two weeks. Plenty of wine, talking and costume
making into the early hours of the morning and doorstops at midnight can
be a lot of fun! Thanks General.
However, we have worked hard on
behalf of the club. We were at Redlodge Strawberry Fair on July 4th. All
the above people except Mark, plus the Borg 3 of 30 - Bob Hedley and his
family, Wendy, Jessica and Michael were there and all had a great time!

This is a
picture of some of us! |
Friday, saw me
and the two Klingons at Gazeley Primary School scaring little 5 year olds
and pleasing the older ones. Saturday, July 10th, saw us at Newmarket
Carnival. There were 5 Klingons, 2 Vulcans and assorted Starfleet reps,
all having fun and posing for photographs. On the following Wednesday we
had our first Lakenheath meeting and caused quite a stir, when we dropped
in at the local Pub in costume! Ke'reth and I went to Farlingay High
Schools' Action Week. The good thing was that the school paid expenses and
even gave a donation to the Sea Cadets.
Until we meet again, good health and best wishes...

DEAR
DOCTOR
This spot is to allow you to have
any questions of a medical nature answered. It also acts as an "agony
uncle" slot. If you wish to send anything in, please send it to the
Doctor.
Q. Dear Doctor, I have a serious
problem! I am a Romulan and I have been stationed on Terra for the last 4
years and I have found myself telling the truth and being honest!. My
natural Romulan duplicity and egocentricity have almost gone. Is this
because I have been spending lots of time away from other Romulans? Have I
picked up a nasty case of Federation decency? If I return to Romulus, will
I be accepted?
Yours worriedly Sub-Commander P'ing P'ong.
A.- Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Going home now would
be social and political suicide! Spend some time with another deceitful
race like the Ferengi. This should help you to ease yourself back into
Romulan Society. If it doesn't work...... tough!
Yours, hoping you fail miserably, Dr. K'batlh
Q. Dear Doctor, I am an Andorian and
I've just split up with my girlfriend and we had a huge row, during which,
one of my antenna was damaged. Now it's hanging limp and useless, what
should I do?
Yours flaccidly "J"
A.- Dear "J", I suggest the following.
Put a small amount of KY Jelly on your hand and gently, but firmly,
massage the offending antenna in an up and down motion. As it begins to
respond, increase the speed and continue until it stands erect and firm,
just as before. If this fails to work, see me in my consulting room and I
will give you some suitable help.
Yours Stiffly Dr.

FROM
THE DESK OF THE KLINGON AMBASSADOR
nuqneH
(Greetings), from the Empire.
I have been asked to write a page for the
Stations' internal News Service. So, please answer me a question.... what
would you write? I'll admit that the question threw me at first.... then I
sat down at my console and stared out at the myriad of stars framed by my
office window.
We Klingons have a reverence for stars. Some might
find this odd, after all they are only distant Suns. But I have always
found them somehow comforting. When you realise just how small you truly
are.
So I sat down and took a long hot swig from my mug of
Raktajino. At one time in my life I thought tat I'd die in battle. A
glorious death, is all that I wanted. But for some unknown reason I seemed
to be hard to kill. Some say it's luck, but perhaps I am here to serve a
higher purpose.
It's for this reason, that I chose to tell you of
my rise to power. It all started back in 2371. I was still serving
undercover as part of the Imperial Anti-piracy Task Force. Then... one
day, near the Klingon planet of Ty'gokor, we picked up a distress signal.
Somehow, a Jem'Hadar assault team had beamed in to the main hall from
orbit. Captain Kambei and I moved in, taking weapons from the base
armoury, we fell upon our enemy. Looking back, it still strikes me as
strange how fate deals you a low blow, just when you least expect it.
There, Captain Kambei and myself stood, we were covered in our enemies
blood, catching our breath, looking like two warriors from the old sagas;
when, who should walk in but Chancellor Gowron! For our timely
intervention, he awards us the betleH'obe' (the Order od the Bat'telh).
Suddenly we are heroes! We were both invited to join the yan Isleth
(Brother hodd of the Sword). I served in this post for about six months
before buying a house on the planet Klinzhai. Then late in 2374, I get a
call from the head of imperial intelligence to expose a shape shifter that
had infiltrated the very heart of the Empire. It was only after
successfully completing this mission, that Gowron asked me what I wanted
as my reward. I jokingly told him to make me a full Ambassador to the
Federation......
In the early part of the year 2375, I got called
to the Federation Starbase 410, located near the Klingon border, to serve
the Empire (under Chancellor Martok) as Ambassador.
During my
tenure I wish to aid the understanding, by outsiders, of the Klingon race.
This I shall attempt to do by language and by printing extracts from a
number of Klingon books. It is to this end that I ask you accept me as
your teacher and perhaps in time, your friend.....
I take my first
reading from the Book of Futures, by Khaless, chapter 16 - verse
112.
"There will come a time, when old enemies unite to defeat
a greater foe. A time when borders will be struck down, as wheat before
the scythe. A time, when understanding shall forge the links of a great
chain that will bind together a new and glorious
Empire."
Perhaps this time is now...... Remember, reH suvrup

THE POINTS SYSTEM
EXPLAINED
Each club member can gain points towards
promotion.
All new adult members (over 16's) automatically become
members of the Starbase Starfleet Crew as non-commissioned officers (NCO)
and start with 0 points. Members work their way up the ranks to the
maximum rank of Lieutenant Commander for non-committee members (Starbase
Command). The minimum rank a committee member (Starbase Command) may hold
is Lieutenant (junior grade) or equivalent. Therefore any member who is
below this rank on joining the committee (Starbase Command) is
automatically promoted to Lt. jg.
Example: NCO gains 100
points, he/she/it then receives a Commission as a Starfleet Officer and is
promoted to the rank of Ensign, with all the privileges and
responsibilities accorded to an Officer in Starfleet.
Please
Note: Only Committee (Starbase Command) members may advance from Lt.
Commander to Commander and above.
If a member, after joining,
decides that they do not wish to remain a member of the Starbase Starfleet
crew, they have the choice of the following:
-
They can apply to an Embassy attached to the Starbase for
staff positions.
-
Become a member of the civilian support service (no
ranks).
-
Create own embassy (by agreement with Committee and
Captain).
These options each have their own rules for promotion or
service awards within the club, and are covered in separate sections of
this article.
First we will detail the Starfleet Promotion
System

When a member
reaches a promotion level, the member must complete a promotion
request form and hand it in to the Duty Operations Officer. These forms
will be available from the Ops Desk.
Each promotion will be accompanied by ceremonial
presentation of rank insignia and a certificate.
Members Under 16 years
For our junior members there is a Cadet Section with its
own rank and points system. (Please see Under 16's table). Cadet
points gained are not transferable on reaching Adult Status, for
exceptions to this protocol, please ask your Divisional Officer.
Divisional Officers will be fully briefed on the Cadet System.
How to gain Points
The methods of gaining points are the same for all
members. (Please see How to Gain Points Table). There plenty of
opportunities to gain points, just turning up to a meeting is one (if
slow) way. Volunteering for various duties is another, even those who
cannot attend meetings, for one reason or another, can gain points by
contributing to the Newsletter or by contributing to the club in a "behind
the scenes" role.
Remember the more you do the more points you get.
Missing Points
Whilst we endeavour to correctly allocate points,
mistakes do happen. Therefore, each member is responsible for making sure
that their points are correct and that any activity, duty or other
contribution has been correctly noted.
DIVISIONS
As the membership expands it is envisaged that we will be
able to divide lower ranking Officers, NCO's and Cadets into divisions
(smaller groups) with Divisional Officers and assistants. This will allow
for inter-divisional activities and further opportunities to gain points
towards promotion. Not only will this facilitate the organisation of an
annual prize giving for the Best Division, Member of the Year & Cadet
of the Year awards; but will also help us to resemble our favourite fleet
more closely.
More information and explanations on how it will work
will be available shortly before implementation. Any volunteers wishing to
be considered and trained for the positions of Divisional Officers should
make themselves known to Starbase Command Officers as soon as possible.
Training will begin at the September Meeting.
Non-Starfleet Starbase Members
Embassies, Ambassadors, Embassy Staff & Civilian
Support
Anyone wishing to create his/her/its own
Embassy and become an Ambassador must put their request before the
committee. Details of How to create an Embassy are available from the Ops
Desk. Please ask for the "Creating an Embassy" Handout.
The methods of gaining points for Embassy Staff are the
same as for Starfleet Starbase Crews with the addition of discretionary
points awarded by their respective Ambassador. Positions and promotions
are attainable either by:
-
According to each Embassy's military or
civilian service rules (Starfleet equivalents).
-
Or at the discretion of his/her/its
Ambassador.
In cases of dispute; appeals for
arbitration, intervention or investigation may be made to Starbase 410
Starfleet Command Officers. All parties concerned will agree to abide by
the rules of representation (See Handout "Creating an
Embassy").
Civilian Service Support
Because this is a non-military role, there
are no ranks or visible marks of promotion. However, it is still possible
to have service to the Starbase recognised by way of Service Certificates.
Based on the same point levels as the Starfleet Ranks, the certificates
will range from Base level 1 service up to Diamond Level. (Please see
Civilian Service Table).
