COMMODORES LOG
Once again it's
time to reflect on the past month. Jeanettes birthday party was a great
Success and I'm sure all who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I was
very tired because Martin and I provided the tuck shop at the Rethink
Disability's SHARE Day. Next year the theme is space and we have been
asked to participate as a club. So, any ideas for workshops would be
appreciated.
The meeting was very disappointing, considering we had
three new members from Mildenhall & Lakenheath. Where was
everyone?
I have some apologies to make…
Firstly to Dave
Mason (Kambei) for not giving him a mention last month. Kambei visited us
in March and became a postal member. He is an original series Klingon.
Welcome also to Rubi Lister another postal member who joined in March.
Second apologies to Sam Hudspeth… It's not Samantha, just Sam.
Lastly, apologies to Jose for leaving off his surname. His full name
is Jose Dias Espino. His photograph in the last newsletter wasn't
very clear so check out the article here in Issue 10
Welcome to our
Scottish contingent of postal members:- Lee & Sharon Close, Archibald
McArthur, James McArthur, and Dean James. Lee is going to be running a pen
friend page, so he would like to hear from you. (see inside for
details).
Hadleigh Sci Fi Convention was a bit of disappointment. Hadleigh is
not exactly the centre of the universe so attendance was very low.
Which is a shame because Kev worked really hard to put on the show.
The Guest Stars were a lot friendlier that at Clacton - Ask Major
Madia what she thinks of Michael Billington! Hadleigh Pictures
Jeremy Bullock
did a talk and during it "interviewed" members of the audience as the new
Bobba Fett.
Having 4 males he wanted a female, so Zuveda
volunteered. He was a bit taken aback when confronted by a blue person
with antennae and the helmet wouldn't fit! Despite that, Zuveda won. He
said she acted the part very well, very sinister and menacing. We put him
straight when we told him that she wasn't acting. she's like that all the
time!! (Lesson one on how to upset your First Officer!!)
I
would like to thank all those people who helped in the kitchen and on the
refreshment table: Julie, Selene, Marie, Shannon, Jeanette on face paints
& refreshments, Tom & Sam, Emma, John and Leigh.
A special
thank you to my daughter Donna . She did all the cooking and cleaned up
afterwards. It ended up cleaner than when we went in. Donna came back from
Gran Canaria in time for the Convention and has now left again. Firstly to
work in Wales and then on to Spain.
I hope I haven't missed
anybody. The General, The Ambassador & David Canning also made it to
the show.
You will see a few new features in this months
newsletter. Apart from the Pen Friend Page, we have a situations vacant
page. and an extra puzzle page. Thank you to all our Contributors but a
special thanks to Ambassador Ke'reth for all his hard work and artwork for
the newsletter. It wouldn't be the same without him.
I look forward
to seeing you all at the next meeting. We have quite a lot to get
through.
Don't forget your Ball tickets £25.00 from our treasurer.
We need monies in by June meeting. In the meantime, all the best
Best wishes Commodore Anarita Jat |

PERSONAL
LOG
Engineering Personnel Log - 03:
Lt. Cdr Saryena Remora of Vulcan
It has been some time since last I made a Log such as
this. My duties aboard Starbase 410 have required me to direct a great
deal of my time and energy towards them. Now, though, is an ideal time to
continue making these Logs, so that documentation of my time here does not
become fragmented. My Logs are a duty of their own, and I must neglect
them no longer.
I received a communicae from my mother, Te’ana,
this morning. She informed me, with much delight, that my oldest brother,
the Healer Sarek, and his wife, Persephone, are expecting their first
child. Persephone was well into her baby’s gestation period before she
discovered her pregnancy. Currently, there is a growing debate between
Persephone and my mother as to whether the baby is male or female. The
more logical members of my family who reside on Vulcan, my father, Sharn,
and brother Sarek, keep reminding the women that such debates are rather
pointless; nothing more than great displays of impatience. In a short time
the matter of debate shall be revealed naturally, when the baby is
born.
Persephone is a human of mixed culture. Therefore, she fits
quite comfortably into the diverse "melting pot" of my family. She is a
pleasant and kind young woman, of my own age.
Persephone’s mother
is a descendant of one of the few surviving North American Indian tribes
of ancient Earth, whose tribal name is Spirit of the Dove to honour her
ancestors, but, to family, is known simply as Dove.
Her people
chose not to colonise on another planet, and so, though they endured much
suffering earlier in their history, did not suffer the fate of many of
their fellow tribes who chose to search for a home on another planet.
Her father, Paris (Grecian), met her mother, when, by coincidence
or fate, depending on your beliefs, they both happened to be holidaying on
Earth’s moon, Lunar. This place had always intrigued them both, and each
decided to go there with a separate group of friends. Years later, they
are still happily married, and live among Dove’s people on Earth. They
have two other children, besides Persephone; her older sister, Antigone,
and her twin brother, whose tribal Name is Peaceful Bear. (He was given
the name because of the origins in Greek myth of his father’s name, Paris,
who survived into adulthood only because a she-bear found him as a baby,
and fed him on her milk).
Persephone’s mixed heritage has also
given rise to a topic of much discussion between she and my mother. What
will the baby be called? Reasonably, my brother and his wife wish to give
their child a name that will reflect each of his or her cultures, giving
the child a sense of who s/he is, and from where they came in this
Universe. Many names are being discussed. Some Vulcan, some Trill, and of
course, a few English language human names. I believe, according to what
my mother has told me, Natasha and Georgia are two of those most
favourably looked upon. Apparently, though, those most hotly debated
between the more emotional members of my family, are those that take note
of Persephone’s Greek and North American Indian halves. Names being
considered are: Chakotay, Gaia, Aphrodite, and Echo.
My youngest
brother, to solve this debate, has suggested that a name from another
culture be used. Onboard the Enterprise E. Lieutenant Commander Data
recently told my brother about his, sadly, now deceased, android daughter,
whom he named Lal. Lal means "Beloved" in Hindi. Personally, I think this
is the wisest choice.
On to other matters:
I have two
engagements that require my presence on Earth in the coming months. I have
been asked by a good friend to attend the fund raising events of the
charity for which she works. My friend, Nala Daresh, is half Bajoran, half
Cardassian. Her birth was a consequence of the Cardassian occupation of
Bajor, which lead to many young Bajoran women being recruited as "comfort
women" for the men of the Cardassian Military. Daresh was put in an
orphanage by her mother, soon after she was born, and has never known her
biological parents. When the Occupation ended, she was adopted by a
married couple, serving in Starfleet, and has lived on Earth ever since.
She joined Starfleet at the same time I did, which is how we met. Most
recently, life as a Starfleet Officer has been made rather difficult for
her. She has become a focus for the hostility felt towards Cardassians. I
am pleased to report that not all her comrades have turned against her,
only a small percentage, but she has born their prejudices bravely. Now
that the War between the inhabitants of the Alpha Quadrant and the
one-time Dominion/ Cardassian Alliance has subsided, the heat has cooled
towards Nala Daresh.
Currently, she is on sabbatical, and can be
found at the Headquarters on Earth of the charity she has founded for all
those who have been orphaned by the war. Her work is highly regarded by
her peers and among latest colleagues, she is a much-respected figure. Her
charitable duties have also taken her to Cardassia, a place, in the past,
she could never have found the will or courage to visit. She is helping
the leader of Cardassia’s new government, a one-time exiled man named
Garak, to install another of her charity’s Complexes on his fledgling,
newly rebuilt Cardassia. I believe my cousin, Kamin, is also involved in
the joint project.

Engineering Personnel Log - 04:
Lt. Cdr. Saryena
Remora
I had to end my last Log more quickly than intended, as
my Commanding Officer, Anarita Jat, called me to the Docking Bay of
Starbase 410 to receive some personal guests.
My guests were my
brother, Sarek the Healer, and his wife Persephone. It seems that my
brother informed his lady wife that it would be illogical for them to
interrupt my duties aboard the Starbase unannounced. But, in true human
fashion, (reminiscent of my paternal grandmother), Persephone
informed her husband that, since they were required to cross this part of
space to get back to Vulcan from Earth (where they had been visiting
her parents). It would be illogical of them to waste an opportunity to
visit me. I am appreciative of my sister-in-law’s persuasive
powers.
She informed me that both she and the baby are healthy, and
that the same can be said for the other members of my family on Vulcan. I
am pleased to hear, also, that Persephone’s family is in good health. Her
brother, whose birth name is Benedict (after his father’s
American/Grecian father) has an arable farm within his Tribe’s
territory, and he is, apparently, immensely pleased with this year’s
crops, so far. Her mother, Dove, is busy helping Persephone’s older
sister, Antigone, prepare for her Naming Ceremony, where she will
officially receive her Tribal name, Willow on the Breeze.
The
ceremony has been delayed, as Antigone has been off world for some time
assisting with the colonisation of Beta Xeris III, in the Beta Quadrant.
Persephone’s Tribal name, which she officially received some
months after marrying my brother is, Singing Bird. As a member of her
family, I was invited to attend her Naming Ceremony. It was a very simple,
but admirable affair. Her father, she says, is truly enjoying his
retirement from the Starship Construction business, where he met my
cousin, Rafi.
An interesting thing to note, is the highly
recognisable coincidence that Persephone’s father shares his name with an
ex-Maquis crewman, now serving aboard the faraway starship Voyager. Which
leads me to acknowledge another coincidence, one of the names my brother
and his wife are considering for a son (Chakotay) is also the name of that
same ship’s First Officer
I have promised my fellow Officer,
T’Pina, to assist in the repair of malfunctioning computer panel in
engineering.

FROM THE DESK OF THE KLINGON
AMBASSADOR
nuqneH
(Greetings), from the Empire.
I've a question for you. What is a Chief of
Staff? I know at least one personwho will read the next few lines very
carefully, my own Chief of Staff!. As you know, her name is b'Sel and it's
her job to keep the day to day running of the Embassy as smooth as
possible. I'm told that it's an unenviable task. Let me list just a few of
her duties here at the Embassy.
First of all, she keeps her
Ambassador (yours truly) up to date on political situations, both inside
and outside the Empire. For this she has to work very closely with
Imperial Intelligence and members of the Klingon High Council. Then there
is the travel. An Ambassador gets to do a lot of travelling but sadly,
very little sight seeing. It's the CoS's job to see to the arranging of my
travel and accommodation. She then has to arrangemy security, for this she
has to be kept well informed on all aspects of my work, as well as her
own. Then there's the overseeing of my well being. So it falls to her to
supervise the EMbassy Kitchens (Klingons consume large amounts of raw
& live meat in their diets). Here at the Embassy, I have to be able to
offer my Klingon guests the best of what would be available to them at
home. To this end, I have my own peronal butcher, his name is Qep'toq. He
in turn has to obtain specialist livestock for slaughter (food is often
slaughtered here on the station). He even breeds his own Gagh (Klingon
serpent worms) so we always have it fresh. I also have my own personal
Chef to prepare my food, his name is Khal.
Back to my Chief of
Staff. She also liaises with my personal bodyguard retinue, the be'nI' Qan
(Sisters of Protection).
Then there's my special appointment book.
Without b'Sel to keep it, I'd never be able to keep track of all the alien
AMbassadors, Heads of State, Planetary Governors, Generals Klingon
Citizens and Starfleet Officers etc., not to mention all the traders
needing travel permits or other documents signed.
Politics! -
Between you and I, dear reader, give me a sharp Bat'leth, any day of the
week....
If you were to ask me what I'd do without a good Chief of
Staff. I'll tell you willingly. I'd have my Naval reserve status
overturned and so back to being a Ships Captain. Better hours, less
paperwork, more action and no politics!....

EPISODE
REVIEW
TIMELESS
SYNOPSIS
Voyager tries out their new Quantum slipstream drive with
disastrous results. 15 years later Harry and Chakotay who survived the
crash try to alter history.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
This was Voyagers 100th episode and was
directed by Levar Burton who also made a brief appearance. This was an
excellent episode and was well directed. It started off with two figures
beaming onto an ice-covered planet and one stating that they had found it.
The camera then pans out to show an outline of Voyager buried beneath the
ice.
The scenes inside the wreckage are quite creepy especially
when we see Chakotay on the bridge and shining his torch over the
preserved bodies of his fellow crewman. Before this episode was aired in
the States, the lists I belong to on the net were flooded with pictures of
Chakotay kneeling beside Janeway and looking quite upset. Unfortunately
this never made it to the screen and I think that was a shame because all
you saw was him shine his torch on her. I wanted a bit more feeling here
especially as their last evening together was spent having a romantic meal
in her quarters. He showed more emotion over finding Seven.
Superb
acting by Garret Wang, he really made me believe in this future Harry Kim,
you could feel his bitterness and guilt at having let his crew mates down
all those years previously. Loved the sarcastic comment he made about
Chakotay and Tess being a "couple, joined at the hip".
Obviously I
enjoyed the big J/C scene in Kathryn’s quarters (they haven’t been this
close since Scorpion part 1) She tells Chakotay he can tell the crew after
desert, but we don’t find out what or who was for desert!! This line was
left out when it aired in the States (to make more time for adverts).
But there were many scenes I enjoyed, liked seeing Seven get tipsy
on Synthenol (nice to know she’s not perfect) all of the ones with the
future Harry Kim and much enjoyed the closing scene with Harry and Janeway
where she tells him that he’d come through for them. This reminded me of
the closing scene of the Season 1 Episode Emanations.
Liked the
scene with Chakotay and Tess on the bridge when he hears Janeway’s last
message (at least here he did show some emotion) but then they had him and
Tess getting close and I’m almost shouting at screen ‘Don’t you dare kiss
her on Kathryn’s bridge with her lying just yards away from you’ I’m glad
to say that they didn’t. As much as I like Robert Beltran I have to admit
that he does sometimes act pretty wooden especially in romantic scenes
(except when with Janeway) There were no sparks between him and Tess just
as there wasn’t between him and Kelan in Unforgettable.
I’m not
even going to try and analyse whether Harry and Chakotay were right to
alter 15 years of history just to save their crew because if they hadn’t
we wouldn’t have any more episodes!
I’d give this one 10/10.

Hi!
to all members of Starbase 410 from USS Lutonia
Stardate:01.05.2000
Admiral Andy Fazekas Commanding the USS Lutonia hailing
on all frequencies to Starbase 410 crewmembers. A lot has happened since
our last communication in your fanzine regarding the Lutonia and it’s
totally party mad crewmembers.
Firstly we have a new website
address http://www.USS-Lutonia.org
Also on
stardate: 22.03.2000.
Admiral Andrew Fazekas was invited to talk live on Radio
Scotland to the Scottish Nation at the unearthly time of 09.00hrs. The
airtime lasted just six minutes but the DJ was unable to take the pee nor
were his mystery guests as the Admiral assimilated them all one by one.
Plus the fact that the DJ liked the sound of his own voice too much also
helped in an easy lesson in how to assimilate a DJ.
On stardate:
24.03.2000 we had the U.S.S Lutonia Science Fiction Auction Event and
despite only two thirds of the club turning up and the failure of the
Peterborough club to arrive we still managed an attendance of thirty-five
due to interested members of the Public coming along. Not only this but we
also managed at least two new memberships on the night and two more from
this event to come which means that the membership for March has trebled.
The event itself ran smoothly thanks to our engineer’s hard work and
despite ever continuing problems with our hosts who don’t really seem to
appreciate us. There was a big exchange of latinum for goods and some of
those goods were brought at bargain prices. The event was notable also for
the turn out of new members to the club and the new uniforms on display.
As with all our events it was hard to retrieve the crew from Ten Forward
due to over flowing Romulan ale.
On stardate: 19.04.2000 it was
our U.S.S Lutonia AGM. The purpose of this meeting was to elect a new
committee for the following year and to have an open forum for discussion
on any matters raised. Roughly a third of the Club turned out for this
meeting the result of the AGM was that the same four Committee members
from last year were all re-elected onto the Committee.
We also had
an open forum meeting where we discussed the Luton Carnival day. The
members also voted to proceed with the Club going onto the World Wide Web
and buying it’s own screen for events.
Lastly on stardate:
28.04.2000 it was our Space Hunter Classic Science Fiction Night. This has
to be one of the most successful evenings ever in our series of classic
science fiction evenings. Not because of the attendance which was eleven
in total, four less than previous. But because when we started at 7.30pm
with "Thunderbirds 2064" little did we realise we would not emerge from
the strange world of science fiction until 2.30am a full seven hours
later! In fact we almost made it to daybreak the following day. The
evening consisted of many episodes of "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons"
as well as a "Star Trek" original series classic. A golden man fought an
alien frog in "Lost in Space" and classic films, such as "Space Hunter
Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" and as a bonus "Killdozer". The beer and
the food flowed freely and everyone enjoyed themselves though I doubt not
many thought this evening would last so long especially in our minds.
These events are famous for drinking, eating, and having no set time limit
on finishing and it is surely only a matter of time before a classic all
nighter!
These are exciting times for the Lutonia especially as we
celebrate our fourth year in existence this May and visit the Dome in
June. Though surely our biggest challenge is coming on stardate 29.05.2000
when we attempt to assimilate Luton Carnival and a local pub afterwards.
But we know with the help of Starbase 410 we will prevail.
Live long and prosper
Admiral Andrew Fazekas
